WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MODERN SLAVERY

Slavery exists, and it is closer to you than you think.

In October, we write a lot on the blog to cover the topic of human trafficking, promoting A21's campaign Walk For Freedom as well as information on what we can do to help make change.

Around 17,000 firms have not published modern slavery statements

Since the undercover investigations in July were posted showcasing modern slavery happening in factories in Leicester, there has been a lot more discussions and light on the topic.

We wanted to use this platform again to write a bit about the scale of modern slavery in the UK.

The Centre for Social Justice revealed that there are more than 100,000 victims of modern slavery in the UK.

This is 10 times the number which was estimated previously by the government.

AntiSlavery.org have found that one of the biggest drivers of slavery in the 21st Century is consumer demand for cheap disposable goods.

Forced labour is the most common form of slavery in the UK. This can take place in construction, salons, shops, bars, car washes etc.

We must recognise the true scale of slavery.

There are some brilliant organisations and charities that are working tirelessly campaigning for strong labour rights, for workplace inspections to be frequent and monitored to prevent exploitative practices from going unseen.

"Nearly two hundred years after Britain formally abolished slavery, the terrible crime of holding another human being enslaved is still widespread here.

Modern slavery is hidden from view even though it is all around us"

- Lord William Hague
