BEING A BEARER OF LIGHT | MATTHEW 5:14-16

If you are familiar with the word, you have probably come across these verses at some point:

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”

– Matthew 5:14-16 (The Message)

As Christians we are called to be the light of the world, but what does that ultimately mean for us? To not keep God a secret, to be His ambassador in this world, sharing the good news and love of Jesus whenever possible. I love how the message version describes being a light as bringing out the God colours into the world. What a beautiful way to put it!

How do we become His light bearers?

“Be generous with our lives” – Does your neighbour need help bringing in groceries? What could you be active in within your local community? Being light bearers can start with something so simple: filling in a need. Reaching out to people to see how they need help or prayer.

“Sharing the good news whenever possible” – This may require you to be bold, but why not invite someone to a church event? Go in a group and make a day out of it. As we are approaching the summer months why not have a BBQ bible study with some friends and invite them to bring more folk along? Good food and good news it’s a win win! There are so many creative and fun ways we can share the good news of God to people.

“By opening up to others” - Do not be intimidated by your testimony, for it might just be the door for someone to encounter God. I at times still get a bit nervous of my testimony and how I encountered Jesus! Despite those nervous butterfly feelings in my stomach I think about how my story can bless someone who might need to hear it. You and your story can have an impact in the lives of those you share it with and better yet it can point them to the One who can turn their lives around like He has done with you.

God is just too good to be kept secret. He has made us to be light bearers, to share His colour in a dimly lit world. He’s put us high on a hilltop; the question is what are we going to do there? Be quiet and stay in the corner or go around shining the bright, radiant, mesmerising colours and glory of God?!
